Best goals from the last 10 years!

Posted by Sportsnob on August 4th, 2006

I was channel surfing yesterday when i chanced upon a montage of Maradona’s famous goal at WC 86. IMO it was the best goal of all time and was the highlight of Argentine football. After that I wanted to compile a list of the top 5 goals of the last 10 years. Its a subjective list and I obviously didnt use any scientific method to arrive at it. I judged them merely on two factors- viewing pleasure and importance. I’ve decided to forego World Cup/European Championship Goals because they are far too well known. So for the sake of not being too repetitive only Club goals are featured in this list.

V’s Top 5 goals I’ve seen in the last 10 years

(Click on the names to see the goals)

5) Fernando Redondo- Real Madrid vs Manutd - Q/F (CL)
‘ He had a magnet in his boots’ is what ferguson remarked when asked to assess Redondo’s performance in this Quarter Final Clash at Old Trafford. It was scintillating and was capped off with a move which drew applause from rival fans as well. Unfortunately, Redondo was consistently plagued by injuries and also tiffs with various Argentinian coaches cut short his international career.

Trivia: When Redondo was sold to AC Milan, there were riots in Madrid!

4) Rivaldo - Barcelona vs Valencia - Primera Liga

Barcelona needed to beat Valencia at the Nou Camp to pip them for the final Champions League spot. All hope seemed to have been lost once Ruben Baraja levelled the scores at 2-2.

Then Rivaldo came up with this in the 90th minute of the game. Spectacular is the word.

3) Ryan Giggs- Manchester United vs Arsenal- FA Cup Semis. This goal after a mazy run against the famed Arsenal back four was in Extra Time against MU’s arch rivals. The move would have done Diego proud. United fans have made sure that Patrick Vieira never got to forget the fact that he was the one who gave the ball away. Of c ourse, nobody really wanted to see Giggs without his shirt on.

gerrard.jpg

2) Steven Gerrard - Liverpool vs Olympiakos at Anfield

This goal was decisive and was scored during Liverpools successful Champions League campaign. Liverpool were heading out of the tournament. Gerrard scored, Liverpool went through and the rest is history! They defeated AC Milan in the final after making one of the most stunning comebacks in football history.

It was a screamer from 25 yards and in the words of Andy Gray, It was a beauty. The commentary is particularly hair raising. This goal had to pip Gerrard’s effort against West Ham United in the 2005 FA Cup Final.

zidane.jpg

1) Zidane- Real Madrid Vs Bayer Leverkusen at Glasgow
What can i say? The magician from Marseille did this in The Champions League Final. Talk about being a clutch performer. Brilliant! This the sort of stuff that Zidane will always be remembered for. Do you agree? Have I missed any that you think deserves to be on the list?

That was a good list of top 5 goals in the past ten years… Although this topic could come under considerable debate with avid soccer fans, I think ‘V’, you have done a great job in being objective.. Personally I would think Rivaldo would have been my number one choice but then again, I dont want to vote against Zidane.. Im looking forward to a healthy argument with respect to this post.. Commendable job V..

  2. Sports Snob Says:

Commendable job V! Btw..Panchos..what would be your top 5?

  3. gapp Says:

Youtube is jsut amazing. They have literally almost all great videos. Nice compilation V *salutes* I liked the Ryan Giggs one a lot, may be cauze I have seen the Zidane one a million times…

  4. Panchos Says:

Hey Sports Snob, I was really hoping you would’nt ask me that question.. This is one issue which would lead to subjective ratings… But I rate my best, more on sheer brilliance than on the event.. My top goal would be the one by Rivaldo, followed by Zidane, Steven Gerrard vs Man Utd a few years back at the Kop…

  5. Kesavan Says:

A good list, would like to add one more to the list. Luis Garcia against Juve in the first leg of the semis of the CL, the first Liverpool goal in that 2-1 win.

  6. Lucas Says:

Rivaldo was awesome in his time at Barca…that was one of the best goals ever, no doubt!

  7. Sports Snob Says:

    @Panchos:

Steven Gerrard has a knack of coming up with such goals, doesn’t he? Pity he didn’t do the same at the WC. (apart from T&T). In fact his goal against West Ham in the FA cup final deserves a place on this list as well.

    @ Kesavan:

That was a lovely goal! For all Capello’s exploits in Serie A he hasn’t guided Juve past English opposition over the last two years :) But then thats a different post!

@ Lucas: That was an absolute cracker!

Wonder what V is upto! He has been missing for quite some time!

  8. Panchos Says:

Not that I like Steven Gerrard too much, but he does have some of these amazin goals to his credit.. When I took a look at a compilation of his goals, I just realised how most of them look eerily similar.. But then, I was placing my decision on the importance of the occasion here… Happy he dint pull out similar ones at the WC.. T&T game should not even be on the record in my opinion…

  9. Sports Snob Says:

T&T doesn’t count yes. but just mentioned the fact that he did score at the WC :) Unlike his partner in the English midfield. (ofcourse I completely missed out on the fact that he scored against Sweden). Maybe V should work on a list on the top goals based on sheer skill alone.

  13. Chelsea Vs Arsenal: Review « Critics Corner. Says:

[…] What a goal by Essien! Almost like Gerrard’s goal against Olympiakos but from a longer distance and a tighter angle. This guy is a bull, and would make a brilliant right back if not for the fact that he is even better in the centre of the park. Just like against United, Chelsea became more potent the moment Mourinho put him in right back and brought in Robben. And right now he is one of the 5 best players in the World (of course most footballer of the year polls would tell you that the best players right now are Henry, Owen, , Ronaldo, Raul and Zidane) […]

  14. Zanni Says:

Redondo es dio!!!! Great job but don’t forget Bressan’s goal in the 99-2000 CL game Fiorentina-Barcelona. And it’s not that I don’t like you English (I’m Belgian) but remember Nayim’s (lucky?) shot in the final Zarragoza-Arsenal.

  15. clash Says:

Henry!! Where is he in the list? He has scored so many amazing goals.

  16. Mike Says:

Hilarious and painful to see Arses demanding Monkeyface Henry goals in this. Agree with the choice by and large. No real differences in opinion… Other goals that leap to mind would be ‘that’ goal by OGS against Bayern in the UCL Finals (the nature of the goal actually and not the skill or anything), Zidane’s goal against England at Euro, Bierhoff’s goal at Euro…

Oh BTW, my fave? Giggsy’s goal. It was stupendous and was scored against the lamest team of whingers ever…and Vieira passed it straight to him… Given that it came just after that saved pen and with United down to ten… Bliss!
