Spanish La liga- Week in review

Posted by V on September 13th, 2006

It was a weekend where the contenders got off to good starts. Barcelona, aided by a virtouso performance by Samuel Eto’o, won their match against a beleaguered Osasuna team. Osasuna look very frail this time around, they do miss the presence of ex-coach Javier Aguirre who defected to Atletico Madrid, a club with loftier ambitions. The 3-0 scoreline was well deserved and seeing Leo Messi run circles around defenders is an ominous sign for all the other challengers. Speaking of whom, Real Madrid finally turned on the style with a thumping 4-1 win and I must say, it bodes well for the league. Last year was a bit farcical. Even when Barcelona showed weakness, no other team looked like taking up the gauntlet. This season looks different already. Elsewhere, Aimar scored his first goal for Zaragoza in a three nil victory for his side against struggling Espanyol.

Result of the weekend:

Atletico Madrid 0- 1 Valencia. It was the biggest game in spain in the weekend and Valencia cemented their desire to challenge for the crown with this well worked win at the Calderon. Torres was sent off in the match but Valencia did enough to earn this win. Although Jaqouin sat this one out, You can expect him to play a big role next week.

Performer of the weekend:Ruud Van Nistelrooy (Madrid)

Van the Man was on song for Madrid with a wonderful hattrick. Although his old club doesn’t seem to be missing him, Madrid fans have taken a liking to him already. Doesn’t look like a false dawn for Madrid, but bigger tests ensue in the league season.

Verdict:

Early days yet. But Sevilla look very strong and may make me regret not tipping them as serious contenders. They beat Sociedad away with a 3-1 scoreline. That puts them top of liga. Solid team, despite so many high profile departures in the last few years. Madrid’s revival is on the cards and Becks and Ruud connecting to good effect was a pleasant sight for forlorn Madrid fans, who have been starved of good football for the last three years.

Supposedly the Sevilla match had a cracking goal, but their matches as of now are not being televised.

And seems like thanks to CL going to Ten Sports, ESPNStar have started showing the Spanish league.

  2. Lena Says:

Ugh, Torres, Torres, Torres. Disgraceful behavior. Boo hiss.

  3. oasisboy Says:

yeah… i heard that Dragutinovic scored a scorcher… but things do look good in la liga… and its live on espn-star! Unlike a certain European trophy… damn

  4. V Says:

@ Kesavan: yeah i did hear about it. I was irritated in India cos they didnt show the liga live….it was awful…and when i leave, they decide to show it live. Damn…

@lena: torres was stupid. He needs to get a game, esp since he is the captain. i like aguirre…he is a great choice. But if he does really well expect him to move. He is on a one year contract if im not mistaken.

    @oasisboy:

too bad espn lost the rights to the CL.! they did a good job for the last three years….i wont be missing Andy gray when an english team are playing. he was sooo annoying. Wonder who is doing the commentary this time arnd. Are they still getting the feed from SKy..i doubt it.

  5. Ravi Says:

andy gray on sky and john motson (hes past his best) on bbc are the 2 most overhyped commentators here in england right now

  6. Z Says:

Andy Gray..his commentary during the Barca-Chelsea and Barca-Arsenal matches were a bloody joke. Fuckin Biased.

  7. V Says:

I think john Motson is like the Richie Benaud of Cricket. People our age just dont like it. Martin Tyler is Numero Uno. Gray is good foil for Tyler, ie if English clubs aren’t playing

  8. Lucas Says:

Andy Gray was a f£%$”£% disgrace to commentary in the CL final! I hope no English team (except ManU :)) goes past the 2nd round!

  9. V Says:

likewise, I started off as a Man UTD hater but then Arsene and Henry started mouthing off… Cant stand the two whining away…and JOsen what i can say about him…Lol….

He claimed this time that the yellow cards his team received were part of an elaborate scheme.LOL

  10. Ravi Says:

@V, motson is definitely from another age as well. i would still relish listening to benaud. but the problem with motty is that he has reduced to a bumbling, shrieking and screaming ‘oooooooh’ at the drop of a hat type commentator.

  11. Sports Snob Says:

@ Ravi, I haven’t really heard motson a lot. But i heard that he got panned for his commentary during the WC. here i have to hear tommy smith prattle about the irish….Believe me, i want a trade!
