Dravid resigns as captain
Posted by Z on September 14th, 2007
In one of the most baffling developments (even by Indian cricket standards) Rahul Dravid has announced his resignation as the captain of both the ODI and Test teams. This comes on the back of a sensational test series win in England and a fighting performance in the one day series. Dravid’s explanation is that he wants to concentrate on his batting. The BCCI will have to be rushed into a decision, the Aussies are here in two weeks for an unnecessary seven match one day series.
The two main options are Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. And one of these two will most likely be made the captain. the fact is that apart from the holy trinity of Tendulkar, Dravid and Ganguly, only MS Dhoni is sure of his place in both forms of the game. Even Yuvraj Singh is sure of his place only in the one dayers. It is highly unlikely that either of the two will get the nod despite the fact that this will be in the best interests of the Indian team in the long run.
The prudent thing to do would probably be to select Tendulkar or Ganguly as the captain of the test team and give one of the young guns the reigns of the one day squad. Bet Virender Sehwag is cursing his luck as he finds himself outside both the squads despite being touted for the position not long back.
In this commotion its easy to forget that this Indian team does not even have a coach.

Dada for tests and Dhoni in ODIs.
I think Dravid resigning is a good thing for Indian cricket as Dravid the captain wasn’t as good as Dada the captain. And his batting also suffered.
Hopefully there is no major personal issue which lead to this decision.

Nah… probably wanted to leave the post on a high. A series win in England is something even Dada couldn’t manage, by the way. Good luck to him… fingers crossed it won’t be Sachin again.
