Sir Alex - 21 Glorious Years at Manchester United

Posted by Lucas on 6th November 2007

Ferguson.jpg

November 6th 1986 is a Red-letter day in the history of Manchester United. That was the day when a fiery Scot named Alex Ferguson left Aberdeen to take charge of one of the most popular clubs in England. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Sir Alex’s spell as ManU manager has seen him secure nine Premier League titles, a Champions League title, five FA Cups, a League Cup, and a knighthood. Even at 65, he does not show any sign of slowing down and his enthusiasm for the game is still intact.

It is rumored that Fergie narrowly avoided the sack in 1990 after winning away at a 3rd round Cup tie at Nottingham Forest. ManU went on to win the FA Cup that season, kick-starting the golden years. A Cup-Winners’ Cup in 1991 after beating Barcelona in 1991 was followed by the disappointment of losing the league title narrowly to Leeds in 1992. The inspired signing of Eric Cantona in the same year propelled ManU to the inaugural Premier League title in 1993 and a League and Cup double in 1994.

In 1996, ManU overcame Newcastle, thanks to Fergie’s mindgames over Kevin Keegan and achieved a second League and Cup double. ManU clinched the treble in 1999 in a sensational manner, winning a dramatic Champions League final, beating Bayern Munich 2-1, the League title, and the FA Cup. In 2001, Fergie accomplished a hat-trick of Premier League titles, becoming the only manager to achieve this feat with the same team.

One more league title followed in 2003 and when calls for Fergie’s head increased after a few trophy-less years, he masterminded yet another league triumph in 2006/2007. Fergie always stated ‘his greatest challenge was knocking Liverpool right off their fucking perch’. I guess he has also knocked Chelsea off their fucking perch when it looked like Chelsea would dominate for a long time thanks to Roman’s riches.

No fan who has watched ManU play in the past couple of seasons would have any reason not to believe in Fergie’s belief that ManU can continue to remain a force in European football for years to come. Fergie is certainly one of the greatest ever managers to have been involved with the game. One more Champions League title for this living legend, and he will gladly fade into the sunset.

Arsenal 2 - 2 Manchester United

Posted by Z on 3rd November 2007

Gallas412.jpg

Over the past week journalists and fans alike had been salivating over the Arsenal vs Manchester United fixture as we pondered the likes of Fabregas, Hleb, Walcott and Rosicky taking on Ronaldo, Tevez, Rooney and Nani. Added to this wonderful set of players was the fact that both the teams have played near perfect football over the past few weeks.

Well, as expected with any of these big games, all the big players canceled each other out and what we got instead was a scrappy and tough game with few incidents of individual brilliance. But unlike a lot of previous fixtures between top teams, we also got a lot of goals and some heart stopping moments. The match ended 2-2 and judging by the match, it did seem to be a very fair result. However, the manner in which Arsenal rescued the point will probably mean that Arsenal will go forward with a lot more confidence than United.

And what a day for William Gallas and Patrice Evra! United’s first goal was a result of Rooney’s shot ricocheting off Gallas, just after Gallas’s header had almost led to Arsenal’s first goal. And his finishing and composure right at the death just showed why Wenger has so much trust in the Frenchman.

Credit to the managers:

One has to give a lot of credit to both Wenger and (especially) Ferguson for going all out for the win. One indication definitely has to be the substitutions both the managers made in the second half, when Ferguson sent on Carrick and Saha without resorting to the expected tactic of settling for the 1-1 draw.

Arsenal’s fluidity, in the absence of Thierry Henry was also quite visible as they attacked from four or different sides as players such as Hleb and Rosicky looked to impose themselves instead of finding Henry as they would have done last year. But full credit to the United midfield and defense for snuffing them out.

Going forward, it looks like, I definitely think its going to be (for once) a four way battle for the title with the onus on Chelsea and Liverpool to match the early pace set by Arsenal and United. Liverpool and Chelsea (and their fans) will no doubt be happy about the results and Liverpool in particular will need to start putting together a good run (starting with the Champions League in midweek) to turn around their recent dip in form.

Man of the Match:

A lot of people might disagree but Patrice Evra was my man of the match. He shrugged off the early booking and set up United’s second goal through his sheer determination. No wonder, Ferguson didn’t really mind packing off Gabriel Heinze to sunny Spain.

England - In Dire Straits

Posted by Lucas on 18th October 2007

The pre-match talk was all about the artificial pitch. The post-match talk was all about blaming England’s defeat on watering of the pitch right before the kick-off. In the crucial Euro 2008 qualifier at Moscow, England was surprisingly doing well, courtesy of a Rooney strike in the 29th minute. But a shocking miss by a poor Gerrard, followed by 2 goals by Russia in a space of 4 minutes in the 2nd half, contributed to England’s downfall.

The 2-1 defeat for England means their Euro 2008 hopes are hanging by a thread and qualification is no longer in their hands. We can safely assume Russia and Croatia will win their other match against Andorra and Macedonia respectively. England have to hope Israel, which is already out of the race, avoid defeat to Russia at home. Even if that happens, England would have a huge task of beating Croatia at the Wembley.

Yet again, England find themselves in the familiar position of struggling to qualify for a major tournament. However, the last time they missed out on one was way back in ‘94 when they missed the World Cup. The English FA is certain to take a beating in terms of finances if the unthinkable happens - Hiddink’s Russia qualifying at the expense of McClaren’s England. The FA is certain to rue its decision to appoint McClaren when they had the chance to get Hiddink or Martin O’Neil.

O’Neil, a manager of the highest caliber and a person with numerous trophies in his time at Celtic was not selected as the FA did not find his presentation impressive. And, Hiddink was supposedly incensed at the FA’s insistence that he make a presentation. On the other hand, a great presentation was all McClaren needed to persuade the FA to appoint him for one of the toughest managerial jobs in football.

For all his lack of pedigree and experience at the highest level, McClaren could have certainly done a good job with the squad at his disposal, IF he had the tactical nous of Hiddink. In spite of the flattering consecutive 3-0 wins, including against Israel and Russia at home, most fans were never confident in a man whose only achievement was a Carling Cup triumph at Boro. And of course, he was as an assistant to Fergie at ManU during the treble-winning season.

In spite of the great players in the England squad, it is really the quality of the manager that reflects the performance of the team. Given the talented players in the England squad, it would have been an easy task to qualify had the team been managed by a Hiddink. A manager, with superior tactical and motivational skills and one who would have the balls to drop under-performing superstars, is needed if England has to win any trophy at the highest level. It will take a miracle if we are to witness England at Euro 2008. Even if they do qualify, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a wily Portugese at the helm for the Euro Championships.

Mourinho Quits Chelsea

Posted by Oasisboy on 19th September 2007

n2230503231_8176.jpg

Jose Mourinho resigned as manager of Chelsea last night, after ‘showdown’ talks with Russian oil billionaire Roman Abramovich. Rumours started circulating on internet forums and RSS news feeds shortly after 11pm GMT on the 19th of September. Mourinho sent a text message to a select group of key players in his squad informing them of his decision – one of whom forwarded it to a press contact. In this day and age, that’s pretty much it, as far as public knowledge is concerned.

Mourinho, hailed as one of the best coaches in the world after his Porto side lifted the European Cup, joined Chelsea in the summer of 2004. “I am the Special One”, he said at the time, and there were few who dared to contradict him. And he went on to prove it – two consecutive league titles, a League Cup and an FA cup in three seasons at Stamford Bridge says it all. The one trophy that eluded him during his tenure at the west London club was the Champions League – two semi-final defeats to Liverpool, both of which could have gone either way, were as close as he could get.

Jose’s teams haven’t always been pleasing on the eye – his first season in charge notwithstanding. In 11 breathtaking months during the 2004-05 season, Chelsea won the league almost at a canter, demolishing all who came before them with a mixture of exhilarating wing-play and resolute defending. Since then, his methods have become more circumspect, with the emphasis on defence. A second league title followed, but this was thanks to watertight defending more than anything else. Some people went so far as to call them boring.

On the pitch that may have been the case, but off the pitch Mourinho was anything but boring. He held sway over the English media like few before him – Ferguson and Wenger were mere flutes in comparison to Jose’s trumpet and crashing cymbals. Press hacks everywhere lapped it up. Not a day would go by without some sort of news item on Mourinho – most of which focused on his unrelenting verbal outpourings. It was a form of entertainment.

Regardless of what people may say about Chelsea being bankrolled, it was still Mourinho’s responsibility to make them play like a team. A large part of the pensioners success over the last three seasons has been due to his tactical nous and man-management/motivational skills. Whether Chelsea will reach those heights again remains to be seen.

Possible replacements for Mourinho: Juande Ramos (Sevilla), Guus Hiddink (Russian national team), Avram Grant (current Sporting Director of Chelsea, now interim manager for their trip to Old Trafford this weekend)

Where will Jose go? – Tottenham (whisper it quietly), Juventus (Ranieri must hate the sight of him)

Blue Moon Rising

Posted by Oasisboy on 19th August 2007

Carlos_Tevez_557909.jpg

Not even the most optimistic City fan would have expected this. Top of the league with three games gone, no goals conceded, the defensive discovery of the decade (we’d like to think) and their city rivals (Manchester United, in case you needed to ask) two places off the relegation zone. Not a chance in hell, you might have thought.

Yet Sven-Goran Eriksson appears to be working the oracle at a club who were in a state of disarray not a month ago. Aided by Thaksin Shinawatra’s millions, and Youtube, he has assembled a team which actually appears to be playing like one – a sight we haven’t seen since Kevin Keegan took the Championship by storm back in 2001.

This was the acid test, though. The one game which could make or break his season, which could make people sit up and take notice, or simply dismiss them as another flash in the pan. I love my clichés, me.

Let’s be very clear here – United took City apart almost at will. Enjoying vast swathes of possession, they created chances with alarming regularity. But without a cutting edge up front (read Ronaldo and Rooney), it all went to waste. Kasper Schmeichel evoked memories of his father on occasion – particularly when he used the Star Dive to save a Patrice Evra shot. And even when he did contrive to spill a Giggs cross, Micah Richards was around to clear any danger.

Steve McClaren must be tearing his thinning ginger hair out – apart from trying to work out which of England’s substandard strikers to play up front, he’s also got several top class center halves to choose from at the back. Richards was immense – alongside Richard Dunne, he took the game by the scruff of the neck, throwing back everything United hurled at him with conviction. Carlos Tevez is going to have nightmares for a while.

City took the lead against the run of play, when the Brazilian winger Geovanni launched into a 30 yard drive. The shot took a wicked deflection off Nemanja Vidic’s legs before curling around a stretching Van Der Sar. One nil to the blue half of Manchester.

United’s best chances of the game, apart from the afore-mentioned Evra shot, revolved around Tevez. He doesn’t quite seem to be replicating his form from the end of last season, but that’s only to be expected so early in the new campaign. His movement was excellent, though, and he kept getting into goalscoring positions. Twice in the first half he broke the offside trap, only for Richards to get in with perfectly timed tackles. A Giggs ball into the box midway in the second half should have resulted in an equalizer, but Tevez could only get the faintest of touches on it, resulting in a goal kick.

United’s best chance of the match, however, came in the 89th minute. A United corner capped a period of tremendous pressure. The ball was whipped in across the face of goal, evading everyone – Richards and Schmeichel included. Tevez at the far post looked almost taken by surprise, and he nodded the ball wide from 2 yards out. Done and, indeed, dusted.

Man of the Match: Micah Richards

El Nino Signs for Liverpool

Posted by V on 4th July 2007

3214428624.jpg

Liverpool as expected annouced the signing of Fernando Torres from Atletico Madrid for 26.5 Million Pounds. His arrival will hasten the departure of Craig Bellamy, who besides the goal against Barcelona hasn’t performed upto the expectations of Rafael Benetiz. Torres will partner Peter Crouch in attack.

It remains to be seen if Torres is the guaranteed 30 goals a season player that Liverpool have missed for seasons now. He has flown under the radar of critics at Atletico Madrid scoring just 82 goals in 214 games for the Castille team. His team was often blamed for his lack of goals. With the 26.5 mill pound capture, and the hopes of a club who are waiting for their first league championship since 1990, he will no longer have that luxury.
Rafa has not had the best luck with his Spanish signings. Only Xabi Alonso has been able to lock in a starting spot in his team. Ex Pool Morientes had a horrid time at the KOP and Rafa will be wishing that those mistakes don’t repeat with Gillette and co breathing down his neck.

In my opinion, Torres has taken far too long to translate potential into goals and doesn’t look like a player capable of solving Liverpool’s inadequacies. Liverpool have taken a huge gamble on this former prodigy, who showed all but flashes of brilliance during his time at the Vicente Calderon. From what I’ve seen, his off the ball movement is top class but his finishing isn’t. I expect him to score not more than 15 goals per season (in the league) at Liverpool, in keeping with his scoring record at Atletico Madrid.

The Merry Arsenal Merry-Go-Round.

Posted by Vi on 23rd June 2007

Henry to Barca

It’s done. As an Arsenal fan it’s hard not to feel the numbing pain that envelopes the entire body. Even as late as last night, I was clinging on the hope that all this was tabloid generated fiction. Its like a failed marriage, you fail to see the signs and when a defining moment comes, it hits you and it hits you hard. For every Arsenal fan this must have been a dagger to the heart.

An open letter from the great man himself. And I say great man because he gave us umpteen moments of joy. The man who put a smile on all arsenal faces every time he played. For all his posturing and pouting, he genuinely loved the club and the fans adored him. Adulation that was second to none. He undoubtedly gave us some of the best memories of Arsenal, goals like the chip over Barthez, the Real Madrid one, the list goes on… There is no denything that he gave the best past of his career to Arsenal. He peaked at Arsenal. He will be missed. Sorely.

Saying all that, its time to move on, Arsenal existed before Henry and will exist after him. He was dangerously close to becoming bigger than the club. And no one should ever be bigger than the club. Even last season the warning signs were there. Even from the sidelines when he was injured, he was always in the limelight, whether it was making statements or doing that silly dance with Adebayor.

At the risk of sounding bitter, what has the departure of David Dein got anything to do with his career. And in his letter he cites Arsene Wenger not signing a new contract also a possible reason. Wenger has always left re-signing of contracts late and that has not prevented Henry from re-signing prior contracts. Though, he has said all the right things those two statements are damning indications that he had made up his mind regardless of AW or DD.

There is a school of thought that he inhibited the young gunners from playing, whilst not totally subscribing to that view, its not entirely incorrect. He was the go to guy, perhaps rightly so, but last season showed signs that the team will not entirely be lost without Henry. The young guns have to step up and take the mantle.

More intriguing is the question on who Wenger will sign as a suitable replacement. Those are some very big boots to fill. Does Arsene have enough money to sign another quality player? Does Arsene know some injury to Henry that we dont know? After all he held all the aces, 3 years to run on the contract and only 16 million pounds? Its all irrelevant now i guess. He certainly has my “Best wishes”, thats the very least he deserves from Arsenal fans. But for feck’s sake I sincerely hope that he doesn’t and make stupid statements(ala Vieira) whilst at Barcelona and reduce his legend points.

The courtship with Barcelona is now over, now begins the romance. Is it going to be a long term love affair or is it going to be case of lust turned sour? Does Henry ,30 this august, have the hunger, the fire, and more importantly the fitness to do the same things that he did for Arsenal? I have my doubts. Sour grapes maybe, but hey i have them in truckloads.

Thank you Henry, you have moved on. So will we and so will the club. Au Revoir!

Man United sign Anderson and Nani

Posted by Z on 30th May 2007

Well, United’s summer has certainly started in an explosive fashion. According to a statement on the official website, it looks like the club has signed two young starlets from FC Porto- Nani and Anderson. Definitely looks like two potential replacements for Scholes and Giggs. And Sir Alex has always been exceptional in the way he has handled potential superstars. It is going to be interesting to see how he handles the two next season.

Chelsea win the FA Cup!!!

Posted by Vi on 19th May 2007

7398_1.jpg

After 120 minutes of football that bordered on the tedium, we had a winner, and quite fittingly it was Chelsea’s man of the season who finished Manchester United off. The setting, the new Wembley , was spectacular but the football played sadly wasn’t, it hardly justified the occasion.

It was the case of who could wear out the other faster. I guess both team had their moments and neither team deserved to win it. The game had very few talking points, may be the Giggs incident is the only one. Ronaldo has proved the big game bottler again. Giggs had some sloppy moments. Rooney was better than the other two. But in a game in which cried out for the flair players of Manchester United to do something, they failed miserably. Chelsea used their usual power play game and got their result. Fair play. A word on Essien, I mean what a player! Not a club in Europe would not want his service.

Its bit of an anticlimax for Manchester United who could rightly feel that they have let things slip in the fag end of the season. As for Chelsea and Mourinho, I think Jose would do very well if he went inside and gave Drogba a big hug. Drogba has been the difference between a trophy less season and one with 2 cups. Whether it was enough to keep Jose’s job? I have my doubts.

EPL- Arsenal and Livepool. Season in Review

Posted by Z on 14th May 2007

Its time to look back at some of my predictions and how they went haywire. Seriously, I suck at these! The original post is here: Predictions

Arsenal (My Prediction- Fourth)

arsenal.thumbnail.gif

I got this one right. Arsenal ended the season at fourth place. A very disappointing season for the club and a poor start in the new stadium. Thierry Henry contributed practically nothing this year (due to a series of injuries). Ditto for Robbie Van Persie. They were pretty competitive against the the big teams (they took 6 points off United!) but poor away form and the inability to convert possession into goals resulted in a title no show.

A very disappointing run of form in the Champions League also resulted in getting knocked out by PSV Eindhoven. (how I relished that result!) A glorious run in the Carling cup was probably the only bright spot in an otherwise nothing season.

Expect the take over saga to run through the summer resulting in Kroenke winning full control and then promising a number of big signings for Wenger. Whether this team ever comes out of the “transition” period remains to be seen. A top quality striker is an absolute must during the transfer window.

Possible Transfers:

Arsene Wenger is expected to find his summer transfer budget this week. The club is doing well financially so Wenger would definitely be able to go after two or three players. And he needs some big signings to convince the likes of Fabregas and Henry. What will happen to Henry this year? Rumours are on that Barcelona are interested in getting Henry to Nou Camp. Samuel Etoo now seems certain to leave Barcelona and Arsenal’s style would suit him a lot more than those of Chelsea and Liverpool. Julio Baptista is definitely moving back to Madrid but whether Reyes will move in the opposite direction remains to be seen.

Liverpool (My prediction- Second)

My original prediction was that Liverpool would run Chelsea close for the title. I expected Rafa Benitez to get it right in England after two attempts. But both haven’t happened. The Reds have lacked firepower up front and also creative wingers. That said, they are in the final of the one trophy that both Ferguson and Mourinho wanted more than anything else- the Champions League. Benitez will be looking to add one winger and one more striker during the summer. I expect him to offload Craig Bellamy to any team that will take him.

Benitez has proved his mastery in Europe but the fans want the league title more than anything else. Its close to two decades since Liverpool and have been crowned Champions of England and fans will undoubtedly be disappointed that the team is not even challenging for the title. But, the Champions League title could prove to be very sweet compensation.

Possible Transfers

Liverpool are expected to sign Brazilian youngster and Lucras Leiva. Funnily enough he is a holding midfielder. Liverpool really lack players in that position! But he has got to be one for the future, whether he adapts to life in England remains to be seen. It is very possible that Liverpool’s best signing of the season came in January when they signed on Mascherano from West Ham United. Liverpool have also signed Andriy Voronin from Bayern Leverkusen, he is expected to add much needed strike power to the squad.
